Learning unbounded by walls

“If the mountain will not come to Muhammad, then Muhammad must go to the mountain.” – As retold by Francis Bacon

At TATVA, we strongly believe that experience of the real world, living and inanimate, is a very important ingredient of a sound education. There is, however, many a situation where the experience essential to a process of learning cannot be brought to the classroom. In all such cases, children step outside their classrooms as part of the learning process to secure that vital experience.

For instance, Grade 1 and 2 children work in the farm patch at school as part of their vegetable growing activities. Grade 3 and 4 children visit a distant farm every year to experience paddy transplantation and harvesting as part of their curriculum. Every year, Grade 5 children participate in a transformational experience when they travel as a class to another city to participate in the Greek Olympics (organised by Waldorf Schools across the country) that gives them the complete immersion in the mood of Ancient Greece which they study as part of their History Block.

Grade 6 children undertake field visits to mountainous or hill terrains to observe rocks and rock formations as part of their Geology Block. For their Astronomy Block, they take up multiple nights of all-night observation of the stars in the sky in rural areas where clear skies unpolluted by strong city lights enable an unhindered view of the stars. In later classes too, various such experiences will be organised as appropriate and necessary for the children to engage deeply with the curriculum.
